Kaiser Permanente awards nearly $140,000 to nonprofit organizations serving the Elk Grove area

Kaiser Permanente awards nearly $140,000 to nonprofit organizations serving the Elk Grove area

Kaiser Permanente has awarded 56 grants totaling nearly $1.5 million to 54 local not-for-profit organizations, schools and government entities serving the greater Sacramento community. That includes $140,000 in funds to organizations serving the Elk Grove area.

The Community Benefit grants – which range in individual amounts from $5,000 to $97,304 – are part of a longstanding practice for Kaiser Permanente, the region’s leading integrated health-care provider, which works to improve the health of the communities it serves in Sacramento, Yolo, Placer and El Dorado counties. Overall, the grants seek to improve access to medical care, support mental health services, reduce violence, develop the workforce and promote healthy eating and active living.

The largest allocation of funding will help the uninsured and underinsured access health care programs and services at various community clinics and organizations.

Salary Negotiations between Sierra College & FUSE LiUNA Local 1212 Have Become Contentious

Following a lengthy negotiations process and an unsuccessful bargaining session on May 13, 2015, Sierra College and FUSE (Federation of United School Employees) Local 1212 have officially reached a bargaining impasse and negotiations have become contentious.  At the short bargaining session, it was immediately clear the two sides remain polarized.  The District rejected a comprehensive proposal for settlement submitted by FUSE and instead put a concessionary proposal on the table that would essentially result in a pay cut for ninety percent of FUSE members given the increased cost for health benefits.  While the District has proposed a follow-up meeting on May 18 with all of the unions to discuss a temporary fix to potentially offset some of the healthcare increases for the 2015-2016 fiscal year, the one-time fix would not address the ongoing structural issues that result in the District offering healthcare benefits that are significantly lower than the industry stand
