Youth Energy Summit Focuses on Agriculture, Food and Energy in Roseville

Roseville Electric, in partnership with SMUD, Lodi Electric and Turlock Irrigation District, will host the seventh annual Youth Energy Summit (YES) training and educational event on January 24 and 25, 2015. This two-day forum for local students from throughout the Central Valley will focus on food and agriculture. Students who will be attending submitted an application to attend the interactive training event which will allow them to focus on and learn more about developments in green energy, technology and sustainability.

The summit, taking place at the Roseville Utility Exploration Center, teaches students through lecturers and interactive workshops given by a diverse group of talented professionals including the energy, agriculture, food transportation, grocery and food service sectors. Some of the topics that the experts and students will discuss are the future in agriculture technology, sustainability beyond the plate and understanding where your food comes from.

After the event students will break into teams of three to five to create a project that fulfills a need in the community relative to green energy, energy conservation or sustainability. Projects can be related to agriculture, farming, food transportation, restaurants, marketing, waste management or other topics that come up during the summit, their imagination is the limit. On May 1, 2015, students will again join together to present their projects to a panel of judges for a chance to win scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,000.

High school students (juniors and seniors) from Roseville, Sacramento and Turlock participating in “Power Our Plate: Agriculture, Food and Energy” summit as part of seventh annual Youth Energy Summit (YES). Event includes interactive displays featuring a worm composting demo, electric car show and how food choices impact the environment.

Participating students and local industry professionals, USDA Rural Development, Center for Land Based Learning, Roseville Utility Exploration Center, Fishnick, UC Davis, Art Institute, SMUD, Slow Food/School Garden Coalition, Air Resources Board, Back to the Roots, Lodi Electric, Solar City, SMUD, Roseville Electric Utility, Master Gardener Programs, Back to the Roots, Sacramento Electric Vehicle Association and the Lodi Winegrape Commission.
