Collin Altamirano, a rising national tennis champion on scholarship at the University of Virginia (UVa) who continues to train at JMG Tennis Academy at Arden Hills in the off season, played a key role in the men’s tennis team winning the NCAA Championship title on May 19, 2015.  Ranked third going into the tournament, the Cavaliers defeated top-seeded Oklahoma in a 4-1 victory in Waco, Texas.  In fact, Virginia defeated Oklahoma in all matches during the highly competitive tournament. And, after playing with heart, intensity and talent, Altamirano made the all-tournament team in singles and the duo of Altamirano and partner J.C. Aragone earned all-tourney recognition in doubles.

As background, in August 2013 Altamirano made tennis history by becoming the first unseeded player to win the USTA National Championship Boys 18s Division in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and earned a wild card to the Men’s U.S. Open.  On August 27, 2013, he had the thrilling and hard-earned opportunity to compete against No. 22 seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber (Germany) in a first round U.S. Open match. Coached and mentored by Joseph Morris Gilbert for the last 12+ years, Altamirano will continue to train at Arden Hills this summer between traveling to tennis tournaments throughout the country and internationally.

“I’m incredibly proud of Collin,” said Coach Joseph Morris Gilbert. “It is especially thrilling to watch him excel as part of an incredible team of dedicated and talented athletes.  The game takes on entirely new levels of intensity when you’re playing for the team instead of for yourself.  It’s exciting to watch Collin grow and thrive along with new life experiences as he continues to take his impressive game to new heights.”

Led by Joseph Morris Gilbert, the innovative JMG Tennis Academy began in Sacramento in 2011 and was immediately recognized as a program for the best junior players in the country to learn, progress, train and compete with each other.  The JMG Tennis Academy moved to Arden Hills in early 2013 and is open to dedicated tennis players between the ages of 8 to 21. Numerous top ranked junior tennis players in the country train and excel together as part of the Academy under the leadership of Gilbert and is supported by a top-notch professional coaching staff.  Interested young athletes must apply, be assessed and try-out for a coveted position in the growing year-round Academy. The high performance program demands a high level of dedication from players, parents and coaches, and the players are selected based on their work ethic, attitude and skill.
