Get Back to Work: Business Cards

In my upcoming book, Get Back to Work: Smart and Savvy Real-World Strategies to Make your Next Career Move, the fourth chapter – Business Cards – shares ideas about what to put on a business card and where to print them.

Here is an excerpt from the book:

Business cards (also referred to as networking cards) are not only for those employed by businesses. Anyone seeking a new opportunity should have a business card. They are a great networking tool, so have them ready and use them.

There are many different places where you can have business cards printed. Try www.vistaprint.com and www.gotprint.net on the Internet, or use a local print shop. You can also purchase business cards at an office supply store, a Wal-Mart, or a Target. Microsoft Word can even be used to create and print them.

Your business card must include your name, phone number, professional e-mail address, customized LinkedIn URL, Twitter handle (if you tweet), and either a branding statement or the types of positions in which you are interested. If applicable, add any education, training, and/or certifications you have received as well. Make sure to design your card so that it is easy to read and has a nice look. Always use the front and back. Make it eye-catching and use a color photo or graphic; this will help people remember you.

For my business cards, I wanted something catchy that would build my personal brand. So what better way to do this than to have a caricature of myself on the card? I still use the same format today. When I started my training business, I began using tent cards, which I can easily stand up in front of attendees at my workshops.

Please share any tips below that you have found to be helpful when you were, or are, looking for work.
